Nitrogen (N2) is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that is the most plentiful element in Earth’s atmosphere and is a constituent of all living matter. It is a common element in the universe and makes up 80% of the atmospheric air we breathe. Nitrogen is sourced from air separation. Nitrogen is available in liquid and gaseous forms.

Industrial Uses

Aerospace

Essential to the aerospace & aircraft industry, nitrogen (N2) is used in high Reynolds number wind tunnels, heat treating furnaces and autoclaves to help create incredibly strong but lightweight materials. Nitrogen is also used as an assist gas for laser cutting applications.

Automotive

Assembly plants use nitrogen in combination with other welding gases to weld auto parts, frames, mufflers and other components because of its ability to provide the necessary atmosphere needed to produce adequate welds with any material. It’s also an important safety component in airbags.

Chemical

Used as a pressurizing gas, nitrogen (N2) can help propel liquids through pipelines. It is also used to shield oxygen-sensitive materials from the air and to remove volatile organic chemicals from process streams.

Food & Beverage

Compressed nitrogen (N2) is utilized to displace oxygen in the packaging of perishable foods. By using nitrogen and removing oxygen, the shelf life of foods such as meats, fruits, vegetables and various snack foods can be extended.

Welding & Metal Fabrication

Nitrogen (N2) is used as a purge gas for welding and brazing to prevent atmospheric contamination from oxidation to the welds. It is also used during the heat treating process for metals due to the fact that any metal over 600 degrees Fahrenheit will oxidize if it comes into contact with oxygen. It can also enhance plasma cutting and, mixed with argon, it can be used for arc stability as a shielding gas for MIG and TIG welding.
