Instead of using gas for MIG welding, you will use a flux core.
Flux core, also known as Flux Core Arc Welding, (FCAW) works in place of a shielding gas. Flux Core is a consumable wire that allows you to weld without gas. When this wire is melted, it creates a shield weld very similar to a shielding gas.
While it may limit what welding project you can do, it is a great place for beginners to learn to weld. There are a few things you need to know before MIG welding without gas.
1. Safety Measures
When you use flux core during your MIG weld, it will create fumes and many flashing lights. Make sure you wear the proper protective gear such as a welding helmet and some protective gloves.
2. Clean the Metal
While you can MIG weld with dirty metals, it works a lot better if you clean the metal beforehand. Simply grind or brush any sand or debris off the metal before welding.
3. Set the Wire Feed
Once you have cleaned your metals and set up your machines, you’ll need to set your wire feed. Make sure to adjust the speed of the feed to match your welding project.
4. Test It
Before welding your final product, it is best to test this method first, especially if you have something delicate. Grab some old pieces of metal that are similar to your project and give it a test try. This will help you find the right speed and heat required without ruining your piece.
5. Weld Away
Once you feel confident, you can begin your MIG weld. Try to take your time so you can have a strong bind. Sometimes when you go too quickly, your final piece can fall apart easily. Some thicker metals might need more time and extra work.
